In Virginia, many books have been banned from public schools. Typically, books are banned because of inappropriate language, discussions about race, gender, or sexuality, or if the story promotes harmful behaviors.
School boards, administrators, or teachers have the right to decide whether a book should be banned if it affects the person who is reading it if they think it will impact them as a person, or if it’s going to impact a community.
Many people have found that tons of books have been disappearing from public school libraries.
These books have been banned by either the school board or the principal of the school.
All the books on the shelf have been targeted for either the books that have been banned. However, it is not like this in all high schools.
Parents of the students also have a say in what is going on when it comes to the library and the books they keep on the bookshelves, and they also can communicate with the teachers and librarians of the school. Most parents may want to have reviews of books that are in our library.
Wrenn Kibler is one of the librarians we have at Gloucester High School. Her favorite book is Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, which is about a family that grew up in a village in the 1960s.
Her favorite books are Harry Potter and The Handmaid’s Tale. Both of these books were banned in some school libraries.
Harry Potter was banned due to the witchcraft that was discussed in the book, and The Handmaid’s Tale is because of religious reasons, and they talk about sexuality.
When it comes to banned books, challenged books are when a specific book is in the library that people don’t want, and forbidden books are when the following people decide to remove something from a library.
Our librarian Wrenn Kibler, believes that just because you don’t like it doesn’t give you the right to take it away from everyone else. You should always ask yourself why the book is being banned. When you ban books and take them away from kids, it’s like you’re taking away our thoughts and ideas.
Your age does affect the book ban because when you’re younger, you don’t wonder as much, but when you’re older, you get to become a teenager, and you start to wonder why.
Gloucester High School has never had a book ban, but we’ve had many books challenged.
This is how the book bans affect us and our community
