I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette Mcurdys is both an autobiography and a memoir. This book is a very sad and heavy piece of nonfiction.
I’m Glad My Mom Died was published in 2022. It became a new #1 New York Times Bestseller and won the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Memoir. She wrote it I assume to share her experiences to the world, this book has topics of eating disorders and abuse. This book explains and highlights certain moments from Jennete’s life from an early age until she was a young adult. It explains how she was forced into the acting career by her mother and how her eating disorders severely affected her life.
The author does a very good job at portraying her story. She does a great job at setting the scene, almost making you feel like you’re there with her. She also does an amazing job at making her emotions known to the readers even if it isn’t directly stated in the book.
However, even with all the good things about this book, the dates in the book can be a little confusing at times. It doesn’t exactly list off at what time a chapter is taking place. Therefore leaving it up to the reader to guess how old the main character is at the time which can be quite tricky.
In my opinion, I absolutely loved this book. I loved the way it was written and how all the characters were so well developed even if they weren’t main characters. I love the way the author gave us all the details and didn’t leave anything out even if at some moments it was embarrassing for the author to admit. I couldn’t put the book down, I finished in about two weeks which I consider fast.
Overall, I’m Glad My Mom Died received 4.5 stars by Goodreads. Despite its very few flaws with the whole dates issue. I personally think this is a truly mesmerizing piece of text. I definitely recommend that you read this. Next time you happen to be at your local bookstore, pick up a copy and read it!
