Announced at PlayStation Showcase in May of 2023, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is one of the most anticipated games coming out this year. MGSΔ is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, released in 2004 for the PS2. Considered one of the greatest games of all time, Metal Gear Solid 3 was a commercial success, with four million confirmed copies sold as of 2010.
Snake Eater was chosen to be remade because it serves as an origin story for the franchise, taking place decades before the other games in the series. The unique title of the remake comes from the development team’s desire to recreate the game with modern enhancements without making big changes to its original structure.
The remake retains most of the original game-play of Snake Eater, with many quality of life improvements. You are Naked Snake, navigating through a forest and using stealth and the environment in order to survive and complete infiltration’s. Features added in later installments of the series, such as crouch-walking and firing weapons in third-person, are also present. There are two control schemes available in the remake, “Legacy Style” and “New Style”. “Legacy Style” is a reproduction of how the game originally felt on PS2. The “New Style” is based on more contemporary action games and the recent Metal Gear games.
Some of the more eye-catching changes come from the permanence of the environment of the player character. Cuts, bruises, and pierce wounds are now reflected permanently as scars on the character’s body, aiming to allow players to tell a unique story with everything they encountered just from looking at the body. Leaves that fall from trees will sometimes stick to the character’s body, and after crawling through a substance such as mud, there will be stains visible on the character’s clothes.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will release worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on Aug 28, 2025.
