Gloucester High School has a wide selection of elective classes for students to apply for. Many of these classes can benefit students in the future. However, one beneficial course that is not offered at the high school is home economics. Home economics is a course designed to help students prepare for future household tasks and needs.
Addison Falin, a student at GHS, said “It’s a good life skill class with everything you need to know.”
In this course, a student would learn about life skills crucial for independent living. Oftentimes the class will include students learning how to sew, cook, budget, and care for children. This class can teach students about things that are really important for their future. However, because this class is not offered, students like Falin are not able to benefit from these learned skills.
Home economics also often includes financial components like budgeting, saving, and understanding credit usage. While Gloucester High School has an economic class requirement, these are vital skills for managing personal finances effectively, so it is important that students have the option for more exposure to these situations. The financial aspect of the class can allow students to make informed decisions about spending and saving in the future.
This course can promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students engage in projects that require planning, organization, and even creativity, such as designing meal plans or managing a household schedule. The experiences in this class can enhance their ability to think critically and approach different levels of various challenges in their aspects of life. Home economics class influences teamwork and collaboration. Many projects involve group work, like preparing meals or even organizing community events. The collaboration in this class is helpful for students to work more effectively with others as well as opening new opportunities for certain students.
In addition to Falin, student Addison Hoover, said “I think everyone should have the option to take this class. It can benefit people without parental figures or role models to teach them.”
Overall, home economics is a class wanted by students at Gloucester, so it should be an option provided to the student body when scheduling their classes for the upcoming school year.
