A black-eyed pea is a legume grown around the world. It is an edible, small to medium-sized pea. This dish is a classic southern-style dish.
What you’ll need
- Smoked turkey
- Chicken broth
- Seasoning salt
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Goya
- Pepper
- Toni’s Cajun seasoning
- Butter
- Sugar (optional)
- Black-eyed peas
Step 1
Boil the smoked turkey in a pot until the meat easily slips off the bone. Drain the water, then put in the chicken broth and add the following seasonings: seasoning salt, onion powder, garlic powder, Goya, pepper, Cajun, and butter. Bring that to a boil.
Step 2
Once that has begun to boil, add the black-eyed peas. Cook on medium heat. Let it boil down, then give it a taste to assure the seasoning is to your liking. (I suggest adding a little sugar, but that is optional.)
Step 3
Stir while cooking to avoid starch buildup; wait until the broth becomes thick.
Step 4
Once the broth is thick and cloudy, remove the pot from the stove and let cool. Serve however you please.
