Teenagers have different opinions on if relationships from high school can work and last. I interviewed a variety of high school students and they all had different viewpoints on how a high school relationship can work and if it can last.
Kayla Drexler stated that she is currently in one and thinks they can work, so long as there is a healthy balance of time with and without your partner.
“Yes, I think they can work,” said Drexler. “You have to be patient, you can’t put all your focus into your partner, and you also have to set time away from your partner to be with your friends. They need to be a best friend not just a partner, you have to treat them like a best friend to and listen and communicate.”
I also talked to Landon Moore, another high school student, and got his perspective as to whether or not high school relationships can last.
“Most of the time no,” said Moore. However, Moore did continue to say that, “in some cases, yeah, you’d connect with the person and undergo a lot of things together that would make you connected”.
While studies have been conducted that state the average length of high-school relationships is from a few months to a year, there are plenty of times where this is not the case. My sister Cierra is 26 and is happily married to her high school sweetheart. They now have 2 kids and she is a stay at home mom. She and her partner give me hope in believing in the validity of high school relationships, even if mine have not lasted longer than two months.
What I have gathered from my interviews and my personal opinion is that a high school relationship can work and last as long as you try. I think both people in said relationship need to put in a certain amount of trust and effort for it to work. However, in the end it can work out if you really want it to.
