Halloween culture for teenagers has changed over the years and continues to. Halloween used to be filled with innocent trick or treating and seeing who had the best costume, now it is different. Most teenagers go to parties and socialize with friends on Halloween. When at parties teenagers drink spooky-themed beverages and dance to the music playing (good or bad).
Teenagers get told they are too old to trick or treat and dress up, but plenty of teens think otherwise, especially the students in Gloucester High School, ranging from freshmen to seniors. A senior, Hannah Cupp, was interviewed about what Halloween looks like for her. When asked how she celebrated Halloween she said, “I like to dress up, go to parties, paint pumpkins, and obviously eat candy.”
Continuing to speak to Hannah about this topic we come to learn that her Halloween traditions have changed over the years, with her even saying, “I don’t go trick or treating anymore. My costumes have “matured” over the years.”
Kennedy Wilhite gave great information about Halloween and what it looked like for her. She explained, “I have a party every year.” Halloween for Kennedy looks similar to her middle school years. She talked about how she still loves to dress up and going trick or treating is something she loves doing.
The freshman and sophomores talked mainly about how Halloween looks the same for them. Freshman Ava VanDine offered answers a bit different from the rest. When asked how she celebrated Halloween she did not really give a clear answer.
“I used to go trick or treating, but as I got older I just walked around with my family.”
VanDine feels that her Halloween traditions have shifted significantly, as she feels like she did “more when [she] was younger.” Overall she misses the holiday she celebrated as a child.
Halloween culture in teens has changed and continues to fluctuate based on new trends, family, and friends. Teens need to keep on with what they think is fun and a good time rather than what they think is “cool”. Halloween culture will continue to change but for now, let’s keep it simple and fun!
