Many people at Gloucester High School have different pets that they spend hours taking care of. When asking multiple students about each and every one of their pets, and asking them if they would recommend these animals to others, these were the answers.
Bianca Mosher has four cats in total. She stated that they can be very chaotic sometimes, making claw marks on furniture, but other than that, cats are good pets. Mosher also mentioned that it is not very difficult to take care of cats, as long as you pay attention to them. Expenses are not an issue, as it only costs her an average of twenty dollars every few weeks to replenish her cats’ food supply.
When asked if she would recommend cats as pets, she stated, “If you are not allergic to cats, then yes.”
Jayden Sheffield has an alligator snapping turtle and a blue nosed pit beagle mix dog breed. She loves both of her pets and highly recommends people follow in her shoes and get them, as they are not hard to take care of.
“It’s amazing and very easy,” she said. “It wasn’t difficult to take care of both animals. While it can get a bit pricey at times, owning both pets is highly worth it in Sheffield’s eyes.
Out of everyone I spoke with, Bailey Kittrell owns the most pets. She has three horses, two donkeys, two ponies, three dogs, and one bunny. Since there is a large amount of animals, she stated that they were not fun to take care of and they are very time consuming. She spends about two thousand dollars on her pets and stated that while she would recommend dogs, horses and donkeys are difficult to care for. Though if she could add any more pets to her collection, she would want some ducks.
Kaylee Smith also owns a large amount of pets in her house. At the moment she owns two micro squirrels, two hamsters, two dogs, one cat, and two spiders. She mentioned that they give her good company and are able to occupy her when she is feeling lonely. While Smith recommends all of these animals, they are a bit high maintenance. She used to own chinchillas as well and would not mind owning some again in the future.
Arella Willams had the least amount of pets, since she currently only has a doberman. She stated that dobermans are very chaotic and slightly annoying, but they are extremely heartwarming. This heartwarming nature makes Williams recommend this breed, as they are very good companions.
While the day-to-day upkeep for her dog is relatively easy, it is a bit pricey to take care of her doberman.
“Everything put together is 600 dollars, every two months, because she has some hip issues,” said Williams.
Ariana Smolnski has dogs, cats, rats, guinea pigs, fish, and chickens. She had more of a negative take about her pets, since they are very stressful and tiring to take care of. She does not recommend the majority of these animals as pets, as she spends way too much money on their upkeep.
Overall, students at GHS have a variety of pets and pet recommendations. Ultimately it is important that if a family decides to adopt a pet that they are ready for the financial burden and upkeep that these animals require.
