It has been a long time since Gloucester High School students have had the ability to use lockers. The school finally took them out because they took up a lot of room and the students were not using them anymore. However, I believe the lockers should make a return.
Some students carry around a lot of stuff with them on a day-to-day basis. Over time that can mess up a student’s posture and leave them with back problems. Some students also have to carry around a second backpack just for their sport. Sports bags can often be heavier than the everyday backpack, causing some students to leave their second bag in their teachers’ classrooms. Rather than disrupting lessons to drop off bags, students could use a locker instead.
When the high school had lockers before there were more students then there are now. The school still had enough lockers for every student, as they were all around the school and took up some room. The space that the lockers took up was part of the motivation to get rid of them, however having a reduced space is a fair exchange to reduce the amount of things students are carrying.
A good compromise to the space would just be having smaller lockers. Rather than full-sized lockers for each student, students could be assigned a half size locker big enough to fit their bag. This would also make keeping the lockers clean and organized easier, as there would be less space to worry about cleaning. Ultimately I think if we brought lockers back they would be more used than they were before, as there is now a higher demand for them.
