As someone who was homeschooled since first grade, school is kind of a new experience for me. Despite how nerve wracking it was when I first started, I have come to really enjoy being a student at Gloucester High School.
One of the first things I noticed was that the halls are really loud, at least it was for me. On the first day of school, I was not sure if I would stay or not. It took me about three days to decide that I wanted to stay at GHS. Some of the things I enjoy here are the classes themselves, as I could never really focus on the videos from my programs. School is a lot easier for me now that I can have someone explain their content to me in person.
I also enjoy the social aspect, as that is the main reason I decided to try going back to public school. Being homeschooled meant that I was pretty isolated, in other words I had absolutely no social life. I kept hearing from my older sister and younger brother that I would enjoy public school. For a while I was skeptical, but in the end I am glad that I made the decision to come here.
My day starts off when I get out of the truck, because I don’t ride the bus. As soon as we get into the school I head to my first class, journalism. As soon as I get in, I start reading a book while I wait for class to start. Afterwards, I head to my English class. I am lucky enough to have it right next door to journalism. I am almost always the first one in, although it’s an ongoing joke between my friend and I, that they’ll beat me there one day. Once the bell rings, I have lunch, so I head to the lunch lines.
My first time at lunch was a little chaotic, as you could imagine. I ended up sitting alone at a table. Media gets the chaos in the lunchroom right, but they never get the friend groups right. I noticed everyone already had people to eat with, whether they’re friends from middle school or just met that day. However, the longer I attended my classes, the more people I got to meet. Now when I go to the lunchroom, depending on what I decide to get, I either get a table for my friends and I or I find where they put their stuff and join them for their meal.
Then we go to our history class, which is fairly close to where we eat. Then my last class is study hall, depending on what work I have from my classes, I either do that or I finish reading the book I brought. Then, I head to the main entrance and leave.
Overall, my opinion on public school is very positive. Sure homeschooling is a way to get done sooner, but there is no social aspect, which I prefer having. The absolute worst part in my opinion is getting up at five in the morning, but even that is not too bad.
