Episode: A Riveting Way to Spend your Time

Colleen Brownley, Editor-in-Chief

Recently I have found myself in a myriad of perplexing situations (mind bogglers if you will). In light of my distressed state, I have returned to a childhood favorite of mine to distract myself from the oogie boogies I have been feeling; Episode.
Episode, if you are not familiar with the game, is a collection of choose your own adventure games, each of which will most likely contain every romance trope in existence. But, that’s the joy in this particular game, you know what you’re getting yourself into and it never fails to be hilariously taboo and slightly repulsive.
Currently I am playing Top Streamer, a community romance story created by Dynasty. The good thing about most community stories is that choices won’t cost you gems- the Episode form of currency that involves most favorable choices in the Featured stories on the app- and on top of that sometimes the writing is decent.
In Top Streamer the main character is a semi-popular video game streamer with a goal of reaching the top ten ranks of streamers in hopes of gaining a sponsorship from a profitable company in the process. There’s one problem though, she has a fierce competitor, Zero, who loves to push her buttons and who also has to be a hunky piece of man. So, when she starts a competition to win a date with her Zero enters just to funk up her groove.
Zero ends up unsurprisingly winning the contest and although the date goes terribly, both their fans can’t get enough of them together. And then, of course, they decide to start fake dating to increase their popularity.
And although this entire article might appear to be a scathing hate piece on this app, I actually love it.
The cheesiness and deliciously terrible writing make the app an enjoyable experience. I revel in the ‘oh no there’s only one bed in this hotel room’ scenes. I find myself basked in utter joy every time a female character falls and her love interest suddenly develops the speed of the Flash and runs across the room, just in time to catch her.
I don’t think it would be an understatement to say that Episode has revolutionized the world. And, it most certainly wouldn’t be an understatement to say everyone should play a game of Episode at least once. So go to the app store, download the game, and you’ll either find yourself obsessed or with the sudden urge to throw rotten tomatoes at me.
